The Story:

The earl of London close relative Rowland loves the mayor’s daughter Rose. But the mayor and earl of Lincoln oppose their affair and did anything to end it. And to stop them, the earl sends Rowland to wars like in France as army colonel.

Rowland gets tired of being in wars; he resigns and gives his army compensation to his friends. Longing to see Rose again, he revisits London and masquerading as a Dutch shoemaker. Luckily, he became assistant to the master shoemaker Simon Eyre, whom the mayor and family members official shoemaker.


He is free to go and back at the mayor’s house because he is the assistant of Eyre. Now Rowland and Rose had the chance to see each other again in secret. It keeps them strong and grows their love for each other, until they finally decide to get married against their parents blessing. Even if they filed case against Rowland, shortly he was given pardon by the king.

Simon Eyre is jolly and unusual shoemaker. Influence by the mayor of London, people also love and like him. And eventually he became the London’s lord mayor.

Thoughts:

A beautiful novel that shows true love and relationship with Rowland and Rose hindrances came. This book also gives clue on how shoemakers made customized shoes manually by hand.
